AI coding assistants keep their conversations on the PC where they happened. Move to another machine and the assistant has forgotten the whole project, and copying the files by hand leaves it pointing at paths that do not exist there. ChatRelay syncs those chats between PCs through storage you own (a Google Drive or OneDrive folder, or a private GitHub repository) and rewrites every path inside them, so a conversation started at the office opens on the home laptop in claude --resume, the VS Code panel or codex resume. It reads each tool's undocumented format, including Codex's SQLite index, sends only the lines added since the last sync, keeps both versions when two PCs changed the same chat, backs up every file before writing and shows a dry run first. It can also summarise a project's history into a HANDOFF.md, or into the instructions file another AI tool reads, after hiding keys and passwords. The engine is one Rust library behind the Tauri desktop app, the CLI, and a WebAssembly web and Android viewer; updates are signed and install themselves.
What it does
- Syncs Claude Code (CLI and VS Code) and OpenAI Codex chats between PCs, with every file path rewritten for the new machine
- Only new lines travel after the first upload; when two PCs changed the same chat, both versions are kept
- Backup before every write, a dry run before every import, and nothing written while the AI tool is running
- Storage you own: a synced folder or a private GitHub repo, no ChatRelay server
- HANDOFF.md summaries and "continue in another tool" via CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md or GEMINI.md, with secrets hidden first
- One Rust engine for the desktop app, the CLI, and the WebAssembly web and Android viewer; signed auto-updates
